(User Info | Send a Message) | I am a Ph.D. chemist who used to work for a Ph.D. petroleum engineer. In 1986 he preached gasoline to me. This is what he believed;
1. Gasoline is gasoline in terms of energy/power and all types have the same BTU per gallon (This was 1986 and was before they came out with ethanol and EPA requirements for oxygenated fuels both which reduce the energy per gallon).
2. Octane rating is important but any money paid for octane over that required to prevent predetonation (pinging) is wasted money. He knew his car needed between low and medium grade (for example 88,5 octane to not ping) and calculated exactly how many gallons to blend and fill his tank with the exact octane he needed. He adjusted this formula for temperature and type of driving he was doing.
3. There are more additives than just antiknock (some people swear by the Chevron Techron additive) and different companies use different combos of additives and cheap gasoline uses almost none (additives add expense). In terms of additives he said to find a major brand that has a good rep and works for you. Each major brand has their own theories on additives and their own mix, which is usually available in their literature/website. Carry only that company's credit card - and it will keep you from being tempted by other brands.
4. The last factor is impurities/contaminants. Here it is a factor of refining and the local gas station maintaining their tanks/pumps. One of the purposes of refining is to reduce sulfur compounds which all stink. If the gas stinks with a rotten or gut wrenching smell (over and above the typical gasoline solvent smell), then the refinery short cut the sulfur removal and probably short cut on the rest of the refining as well (meaning higher levels of lights which escape and heavies which tend to form carbon and noncarbon atoms that form more acid gases in combustion.
4.b The gas station/gas tankers can contaminate the gas with water (most common) and particulates (dirt). They can also be responsible for having old stale gas (same problems as running the bike in spring on gas from fall). Here it is a matter of picking your poisen. I personally believe that stations that do mechanical work would not commit sins with gas (I never met a true mechanic who could stand to see a motor purposely damaged). Some people believe in the major oil companies control over their stations and trust the brand, I do not. I look for well maintained station that has a good mechanic with a brand I trust. I avoid the dumps and convienient stores no matter what the brand. |
