I still need to try re torque the cylinder head bolts.
It's Sunday morning here and very rare that I don't go for a ride, but we had a mates 50th last night and I knew there would be a fair chance of not being legal to ride today so I haven't bothered trying to work on the bike yet. I did get a little DS7 back together yesterday and took it for it's first test ride.
Too many reasons not to work on this bike but I will try get to it soon.
Have a good week end

Yeah, that's a good annealing/sealant process for copper gaskets. It needs to get to the point where it just starts to glow...
But Scott's issue is that his base gasket leaks. |
Sorry, should have read better turn 64 last week and already going down hill. |

Oh! I remember how I used to do it... I would mix alcohol with Yamabond so that I could paint it with a small paintbrush. I would paint it on the top case and the bottom of the block and let it dry, and that's what worked for me. I guess since you have a gasket, you could paint both sides of the gasket too. |

Hello, how's it going?
A good news day to day.
I took the bike for a lap this sarvo to get a new battery. As I went over the first speed hump in the bike park I stalled it as the bike bottoms out on these bloody things and I haven't ridden it for ages. Couldn't start the bike so I rolled it back down the hill and fucked up clutch starting it, so just parked it on the footpath and walked a bit further to go get the new battery.
Back at the bike with the top of the line battery (sold out of the cheaper one) I went to grab the tools from the floor of the side car to find they had gone under the seat during my test race to the battery shop and I can't reach in to get them out.
I made do with a 12mm socket for a 13mm nut which takes ages, to find that the bike still didn't want to crank over.Bugger it I thought I will just keep pressing the button and eventually it cranked over and started. The thought crossed my mind that I may have just wasted my money on that battery.
Any way got the bike home and tried starting it. Sometimes it would crank over and some times it wouldn't. Yeah probably did waste money on that battery.
Oh yeah the good news is the bike doesn't leak oil from the base gasket. Turns out it was coming from the valve cover gasket and running down. Should have considered Mr Newton's finding earlier. At least I didn't pull the engine hey.
Have a good one

Good news on the oil leak. That should be easy enough to fix.
Now that you have a spare battery, isolating your starter problem is going to be a bit easier too I guess it has to be either a bad electrical connection, bad starter relay, bad starter motor or maybe the starter clutch? Jumper cables from a battery to the starter motor will rule in/out the starter motor and starter clutch, then it leaves the bad connection and relay to check.
Good luck with it, you are getting close!
Cheers,
Chris |

Good thinking mate. I'll give it a go over the weekend finding the start problem the way you said.
I've already sorted the oil leak and that was the 3rd time I've run it for 10 minutes or so since fitting the valve cover gasket correctly. So no more time spent on that stupitity. |

One thing you'll find on these things is the switches are basically junk. I'd be your non start issue is the button on the throttle housing. Mine did that randomly too when I first got it. I took the time to just take everything off, out and clean it thoroughly. I mean shiny copper clean and put it back with some dielectric grease. If you or the previous owner was one to ride in the rain, those switches are filthy. Bet on it. |

Cheers guys
I had a mate put the engine back together in the end. I had run out of spare time and he has started a workshop from home so the price is right.
I will try to test ride this bike on Sunday and then I think it will be at the front of the garage most Sunday mornings from now on. It's probably been over 2 years since I bought it and I have only put about 2 - 3 km's on it.
The sidecar is running fine and after a 300km ride last weekend the oil leak from the base gasket is obvious, but nothing that I can't live with until I have nothing better to do.
Have a good one

Thanks
The lounge area is used every Friday night for thinking. Wait, I meant drinking. It is nice to sit and contemplate, but it sometimes gets in the way of working on bikes |

Wow Scott, I haven't posted anything since you bought the bike. I'm so glad you found out why it was going through main bearings. I suppose it's the difference between a great mechanic and shit you pay for twice by the others. Mate it looks like the day I delivered it to your mums house. I hope you enjoy your first ride and all the people that will come and talk to you about your bike as they did when I had it. Do you want to swap it back for a slightly used KTM?
Your a top dude mate and I hope you love the bike as much as I did. 👍 |

Hi Scott I can't imagine that you are even contemplating taking it off the stand, then riding it and getting it dirty. I take my hat off to you, amazing given what you have been through |

G'day Norm, how are you mate?
I can be patient no worries, I've probably owned this bike about 2 years and haven't ridden it yet, but I didn't build the bike, that's the way I got it off Craig so he's the dude who done the hard yards.
I still didn't ride the poofter today either. You know there are always things that get in the way so maybe next weekend.
And Craig.......No thanks

This thread came to mind again.
I have tomorrow off work and planned on going for a ride now rhe 1100 is sorted (temporarily).
I thought I'd put in the "shifting star" and test it out tomorrow.
The barstard clutch nut said "no ride for you, wipe that grin off your face and stay home" |

I have a spare brand new nut off a CBX that I hope would be the same that you are welcome to FOC Scott.
Please tell us the thread on the shaft is still good - that would be just TOO much. I mean, really, how much can a koala bear?
I can leave it in my letter box if you wish (I have to work tomorrow, bugger it). I am in the Inner West only 30 mins from your gaff.
SMS or PM me. Rest assured, we WILL prevail over this confounding contraption and get that SOB on the road!
Cheers...Tony |

Man, you have got to be kidding me! You have had the worst luck with your bikes. I wish there was something I could do to help you out. I am not at home so cant even help you out with a clutch nut of the rebuild bike.
Your luck has to get better soon!

Cheers gentlemen
I robbed the sidecar. It's off the road without a starter clutch and now a clutch nut. That will teach it to leak oil.
Now I think I will see how far from home I can go tomorrow before breaking down. Actually I'm pretty sure the bike will be fine now so with a couple of tools and a mobile phone not too much can go wrong.
Tony, thanks for the offer dude, but I need to order a few parts from Honda so I will add the clutch nut to the list thanks mate.
I will report back with good news after the ride I'm sure.
