Hello there

I went to take the new 1100 for a run this morning. Started it and warmed it up for a couple of minutes in the drive while I put my gear on. It cut out as I was doing up my helmet so I switched the ignition off while I finished getting ready. I jumped on the bike and hit the starter nothing happened just like the battery had gone flat. As I am waiting for a new battery to arrive in the mail I thought "she'll be right, I'll clutch start it rolling down the hill from my house"

What do you think is coming next..... The bike didn't start and it is a long push back up the hill and into the garage. I pinched a nerve in my neck and nearly shit my pants straining so hard.

It doesn't get any better. I hit the starter and it sound like it was cranking over way too fast. May be a starter clutch or starter gear. But it did sound like the engine was turning over but with out compression. Very weird.

Checked for fuel, checked for spark both good. Pulled the plugs and put my finger over the hole. Well fuck me no compression but pistons are going up and down.

The only bright side to this that I can see at this point in time is that maybe if the bike had of started and I went for a ride I may well have been fucked up or killed by some stupid cunt coming the other way. There has to be a reason why it broke, maybe anyway.

Is it OK to smoke a joint and drink beer on a Sunday morning or should I stop sulking and get to fixing this thing.

Scott

Damn sorry to hear this... I think you might want to open the valve cover and have a peek at the A cam chain...

Cam chain broke.

Man it is so much nicer working on a bike with no fairing and no sidecar.

What is the odds of that happening, a broken cam chain and broken cam gear bolts on 2 bikes in just a couple of weeks .

What's with the cap nut on the right, did the chain take the top off that when it broke?
Feeling ya pain mate.

Wayno

That's all cool mate I know I'll get it sorted.

It's Sunday after lunch here and I've just cooked a BBQ had a couple couple of beers and I'm going to make some satay now so the bike will have to wait a bit. But I'm kinda looking forward to doing 2 at once. That's not me going all nuts, that's just mucking around and having a laugh, that's how I normally talk, nothing too serious with me.

You guys have still got your whole Sunday ahead of you I think. So have a good Sunday everyone.

Just headed to bed here Sat night mate....yea I know how you talk....this has been a true test of happy-go-lucky Oz character mate....Like Dale said what are the odds of this happening to two different bikes in a matter of weeks?!?!?? Geeezzzzz man.....I know I'd be just a tad on the low side of frustrated!!! I'm having my own war with the new blue 1100F....getting the clutch sorted...discovered the steels were ALL installed backwards, the air box cover was installed with Hondabond, and the air filter installed backwards like the clutch plates LOL.....that's just the start!!! But like you say, it's all good and we will get them all sorted!!!! Good Week ahead to ya mate!!!!

Here's something good that came of this.

Tidying up a bit and putting stuff away that I never do in preparation for the engine work.

Found where I put this "space rock"
I found this years ago at Wolf Creek crater when we camped there overnight

I don't know what it is but I found it near the crater where most other things are red sandy dirt in the outback.

Scott dude what can I say except FUUUCCCKKk
That was a knew chain when I did the rebuild 5k ago. It was not the genuine Honda one, from memory it was from a Raptor or something. I'm sure in the bunch of spares you got there is a knew Honda chain that I bought, but was told not to use it. The guys that fixed the oil leak were well aware how to tension that guide. It was the second time they had done it for me. I suppose that means it all has to come apart again?
If it does I'd be putting on a boat and shipping it off to the land of the long white cloud.NZ.
I here there is some guy over there that knows how to build these motors with good results.

All jokes aside, I fell your pain and hope you can fix it for not much money.

Rexe it's all good mate. A bit of work and a couple of $"s she'll be sweet. Easy as.

I got a bargain mate you know it. I can turn the engine with no resistance of pistons hitting valves. I suppose that's good and hope it means nothing is bent.

Not many dudes would, after selling a bike put it in to fix an oil leak when you could have just wiped it with a rag so you know I appreciate that.

If the cam chain broke and you turned the engine, you may have some bent valves now....sorry to say that. But the camshaft in a static position will hold a few valves open while your pistons are approaching tdc.

Jesus, Scott, all I can say is BUGGER! and I SO feel your pain. Anything I can do to help? Just let me know. I have plenty of shims if that helps and carb sync gear as well.

Lemme know, sorry we didn't catch up at The Creek.

Cheers...Tony

It's got to come out and be pulled down anyway so we'll know for sure soon enough if it has bent valves.

I feel quite lucky that the bolt fell out at idle as I was about to take the bike out for an early morning run and really stretch it's legs and I think the damage at high revs would have been worse.

Gday Tony

You get up early too mate. We all have these hick ups from time to time. Maybe I can put both these engines back together and not pull them out for a very long time after this.

Have a good one mate

It fell out while the bike was idling in my drive way causing the engine to lock up. Maybe it got caught down in the crankshaft end of the timing chain.

When I jumped on the bike and hit the starter I thought it sounded like a flat battery or maybe a loose earth because it turned a little bit and then no more. I had found the battery cable very loose the day before and also knew the battery was old.

I decided to clutch start it and then decide if I would go for a long ride or a short one.

Ended up pushing the bike back up the hill (just) and now I realize clutch starting it was not a good idea

Hey Scotty.....

Way to go mate in taking it all in stride. Use Loctite on the slotted gear bolts mate. Good news is when you get them sorted they will be good for many years.....Might want to invest too in Brent's tensioners and guides...The space rock is cool man!!!!! Put it on display now in motor central!!!

There's a good guy on the island to the southeast that has good cam chains. Wink

Tough luck Scotty....but not the end of the world....I must admit, that's a dreadful sight in the last picture....A few cans no doubt to rectify this, but good news is you won't have to worry about it after you're done.....
