Thanks for the pics, greenthrees.
I think the front view is growing on me.
Do you have any idea/more pics of the red bike in the background of photo #3? |

Smurdoch,
Sorry... I was TOTALLY transfixed/hypnotised by the CB1100R....
I didn't really pay much attention to the "other" red bike,
I simply thought it was the new CB1000R Hornet with a few factory extras |

I can easily see how that would happen.
I was under the impression that this bike was going to more sporting than the VFR or Blackbird. More muscle than sport touring.
It is a beauty. |

I like this retro R bike! Any word on the engine? Is is it your basic 1000-1300 CB engine or is it anything special?

Stoutblock,
I'm told its an all NEW air cooled engine that meets the latest Euro noise regs
but it is the SAME engine that the new CB1100F will have,
Apparrently the new CB1100F (shown LAST December 2007 in Tokyo),
has already got approval for production,
the CB1100F is expected to land in the dealers in 2009. |

Unfortuanlly from my contacts at Honda, this is just a show bike.
IE it will not go into production...sad, but even IF it did, it would not be available to the NA market..
And thats a big IF.. |

It looks to me like the engine in that CB1100R is a 'stressed member' - meaning it effectively forms part of the frame. The Kawasaki Concours was a somewhat similar design and that bike was notorious for a 'buzz' transmitting through the handlebars at certain rpm, leading to numb hands!.
It sure looks handsome though |

It's about 25 years too late.
They should have released that when all the kiddies that grew up watching and playing Tron got our... err... their licenses |

call me an old stick in the mud but in my opinion some things are better left alone,I am lucky enough to have owned and ridden original 1100Rs and as easy on the eye as the new machine is it will always lack the character and purpose of the original unless it is built to the same exclusive criteria |

Unfortunatly the designers do not ride or bring "dates",since the original use of a bike was to pick up women.
You get a nice racing bike, big power,no passenger accomodations,or a "cruiser" that is slow and weighs as much as a car. Nothing in between.
I hate to be a sore point here, but even my kid has discovered this. He rides an '02 GSXR 750 to work and it beats up his wrists. The old junk Turbo Kawasaki is a nicer ride.
The old ZRX 1100-1200 Kawasaki was the newest nice to ride machine. The replacement Z-1000 was weird and not as nice.
As long as we want to ride with our ass a mile high and hold onto the front axel but at the angle of a roto tiller any new bike is great. |

Why do you think I prefer the old UJM's over modern sportbikes.
But ya... for long distance touring (800 mile days) I'll never replace my Vulcan.
Oh... and it's only 800 pounds... a Corolla is almost 2k more and 1/100th the fun getting there |

That DN01 or whatever it is looks like the deformed progeny of a threeway between a goldwing, VFR, and a scooter with none of the good points of any of them. |

It is the logical ending of the old Pacific Coast.
Everybody did not like it because it looked like a scooter. I thought it was shit becasue it did not have the larger of the engines it could have had. This was the beginning of what all these cruisers have become with the advantages of a big engine,ie pulling power without revving the shit out of them.
I cannot comment on the Vulcan,my most recent purchase is an '06 Harley Superglide. This was to get a comfortable ride so my wife could ride with me again. The Honda 1100F seat was torture for her.
The newer bikes with a pad for a passenger seat and foot pegs more suited to Kentucky Derby jockey do not make a good ride. In fact and it was 10 yrs ago,all my pit bikes were taken by all the other riders and I begged a ride from the truck to the start line on a GSXR. The pegs were so high I could not climb on easily. In the 5 min ride my legs cramped up and caused pain. I could not contemplate riding that "rack" for any miles.
Obviously it is easier to attach the rear foot pegs to the frame section, than a separate section down closer to where they should be,like the aluminum plate on the "F".
I guess making a bike that looks like a late 60's Bonneville with the nice tear drop tank is just too hard a concept to grasp. Even Triumph was not very smart considering the first Trident. It had an ugly gas tank and "Buck Rogers" mufflers and did not sell well. They came out with a "custom kit" of bodywork that looked like a Bonneville and then it did. Honda did the same thing on the first CB-450. An ugly humped tank and then a custom kit so you could sell them.
The rototiller handlebars give no leverage on a "U" turn so it can fall over. At least on old bikes you could get different bars, but the clip on type are at one angle and that is it.
I actually think they should transfer the motocross designers over to the street bike section so you get a bike at least close to the correct ergonomics and not designed for what someone that designed appliances thinks "looks good". |

Wow!
I say ride what you like
I don't care if i'm faster or slower than anybody - or if I look cool in anyone's eyes or not.
Riding is the main thing - wind in your face and the countryside whizzing by, smelling fresh cow shit and pine forests whilst at it! |

I hear ya on the motocross designers.
They came up with Motard. One crowd loves them, the other crowd hates them.
I like my dirtbike, but at 6'3", I still changed the bars to a taller bend, added 3/4" risers (double as adapters to mount the 1-1/8" bars to the 7/8" clamps), changed the seat foam so it's just over 2" taller, and lowered the pegs by an inch.
At least now I can get from a seated to standing position without feeling like I'm squatting 400lbs.
The Vulcan? Floorboards, 16" ape hangers... It's a La-Z-Boy on wheels and I like it that way. |
