Wrecked my 750 yesterday

While coming home from work yesterday I was involved in an accident and wrecked my 750. I'm OK but a little banged up and sore. I haven't seen the bike yet so I'm not sure on the extent of the damages.

I was travelling in the left lane at about 50 MPH and was overtaking another car in the right lane. The car in the right lane was slowing and preparing for a right turn which I didn't know this at the time since I was at the side of the car and didn't have a view of its turn signals. A car sitting at a stop sign on the right side of the highway made a left turn in front the turning vehicle to my right. I have no idea why but it stopped in my lane when the driver saw me. I hit the brakes real hard while trying to maintain my lane and the car stopped in my lane started moving forward so I eased off on the brakes slightly. The car stopped again so I hit the brakes harder and swerved slightly to avoid a collision. I went down on my right side and my elbow and helmet struck the ground.

I was tended to by paramedics, strapped to a board and taken to the ER by ambulance. I never lost consciousness but had quite the headache so after a CT scan and exam I was released a few hours later.

So today I'm waiting for the tow company to deliver the bike and have sent my brand new Shoei RF129 helmet back to Shoei for a free inspection.

Just terrible news but sure glad you can write about it. Hoping the bike didn't hit anything solid and just slid on its side.

WTF did he stop for? People should have a mental acuity test before being issued a driver's license. Rolling Eyes

Major bummer Cary, but I'm glad you're ok. A few bumps and bruises are a lot better than what could have happened.

I hope that the insurance adjusters take care of you fairly so that you can bring that beauty back to pristine condition.

That is a bummer Cary. I am glad you were able to 'walk away from it' so to speak. That is the best part of the story and, that you live to see another day. The bike may be repairable. Mine was and still going twenty five years later

Bikes can be replaced, you can't.

Take it easy for a while, heal up and get well soon.

BTW, "heavy machinery" mentioned in medicine precautions includes lathes and mills.

Have a beer, pet the dog. Borrow one if need be.

Wow!! And owww! I really am glad to hear you made it through ok. I hope that you will get covered for all of the damage that incompetent driver inflicted upon you. They never can remove the bad memory but you should be proud of yourself that you were able to maneuver enough to prevent even greater damage to you and your bike.

Please let us know how you are doing over the next few days. Take care of yourself and heal up quickly.

Ditto all of the above. It wouldn't surprise me if that driver stopped twice in front of you because he/she hates motorcyclists. Evil or Very Mad

sorry to hear Cary. bikes are easier to fix than people so I'm glad you're injuries weren't too bad. give time time and heal up right. not looking forward to those pictures. good luck.

Hopefully the bike is sound and just needs a few minor repairs Smile

As some of us know, these bikes actually hold up pretty well in when accidents happen... Smile

Believe it or not, that same crap can happen in a car-v-car situation. Good friend of mine had help writing off his pristine 2012 Challenger R/T Classic back in May. Another bone head turned left in front of him. Broken ribs, broken foot, bruised thumbs. He'll be o.k. in a few more weeks.

I only have liability insurance on the bike so does anybody have any suggestions on how to negotiate a settlement with the other driver's insurance?

When I was rear ended years ago on m y first bike, I only had liability insurance since it was so old. The bike was totaled and I sustained minor injuries. I provided written proof of the money I had into the bike along, with some info regarding the value based on it's pristine condition. It took some phone and fax work with the adjuster, but they finally ponied up the money to replace the bike. Hopefully you have lots of receipts to prove what the bike is worth. I'm not a big fan of personal injury lawyers, but if you sustained any injuries, it can't hurt to talk to one at least for advice. Mentioning this to the insurance adjuster might encourage them to settle fairly with you before the lawyer gets involved and goes after them for a lot more money.

Did the turning driver get a ticket? Hopefully he did as it will make recovery of your losses that much easier.

I hate to say it, but the other vehicle's insurance company probably is not going to pay for the bike damage. I think it is wrong, but the standard is usually that the following vehicle is responsible for stopping - regardless of why the leading vehicle stopped. So basically someone can lock em up in front of you and if you hit them it is considered your fault. However, insurance companies cringe when they think they may have to pay for bodily injury - like say your back was hurt, and could not work, etc. I'm not saying to do this, but it is not uncommon to cut a deal to pay for vehicle damage in exchange for signing a liability waiver (meaning you wont press the matter in court. You would probably need an attorney to work that angle thought as you basically need to threaten a full blown law suit. Hopefully I am wrong in your case. Heal up.

I wasn't following them. The other driver was cited for failure to obey a stop sign. She made a left turn onto the highway from a side street and stopped in my lane rather than using the center turn lane.

You might want to research the laws but I believe if you contact an lawyer the are entitled to a % of the money even if they never had any input .
