Here is another Superbike "Tribute" that I have been contracted to build for a customer at dB Customs. The bike will have 82 paint scheme with sponsor logos, OHLINS suspension, converted GSXR 600 swingarm, billet AHM style triple clamps, JAYGUI Racing exhaust, OZ Racing's Gass forged aluminum wheels, Brembo brakes, Nitro rearsets, and reworked engine with Yoshimura TMR-MJN carbs.

Here are some pics to get started.

Front and rear end mock up.

The stock CB1100F steering stem was adapted to the billet AHM triples and pressed in with new bearings.

I fabricated pivot bushings to allow the stock CB1100F pivot axle to be used with the GSXR600 swingarm. The pivot bushings are also designed such that they fit snug between the pinch points of the frame.

I'm also now a distributor for Speedcell batteries, and so everyone of my customer's builds will have them. They are a real trick unit and weighing in at only 1.1 lbs!

Looks like this will be a very nice bike when you're done. What wheel sizes are you using? What size of tire will you run on the back?

Cheers!

I always use the same combination, 3.5 / 5.5 x 17 with 120/70-17 and 180/55-17 tires ....

Retail is $199 USD plus shipping and can be sent direct to you (drop shipped) to save on shipping. Can have the battery cables and quick connect sized specific to your needs.

Where did you get those carbs? I know it's not good to think this way, but I would buy them on looks alone!
Are you picking those up as a resale item? What was the cost? Size? For what engine displacement?
Sorry for all the questions 🤓
Looking forward to hearing how they perform!

Just another progress pic on the bike.

Mocking up the oil cooler to sit under the headlight just to get some measurements for the bracket and check all clearances. The steering damper will be located where the original oil cooler is just like on the 82 superbike. Welded on some DZus fasteners to secure the side covers. Bodywork will be going for paint this week.

Looks nice Darren.

I don't suppose that the swingarm pivot spacer that you fabricated are identical to the set that I sold you?

"I fabricated pivot bushings to allow the stock CB1100F pivot axle to be used with the GSXR600 swingarm. The pivot bushings are also designed such that they fit snug between the pinch points of the frame."

Thanks for the plug on where that came from.

Excuse me? Nope, not at all, would you like me to show you and everyone a pic of them?

THAT bike which houses the swingwer you made for me is still together (the CB1100RD, which I gave you FULL credit for on the swinger in PRINT and ONLINE), and hasn't been apart since. I never took measurements from anything you provided, including those pivot spacers, why would I need to? This isn't my first time doing this Jim. I only had you make me that swinger on the 1100RD because I was WAY too busy at the time and knew you would do a good job at it. You did a great job and it was fully acknowledged. I am sure you got some good exposure because of it too on Motorcycle.com when your business name was mentioned and accredited. In that respect, I gave you "the plug" Wink

If you also recall, I am quite capable of making anything when I have the time to do so. The pivot bushings are child's play knowing what the distance between the pinch points are, just like I did on the Evolution, well before you were doing anything like this full time. Don't worry, you will get full credit on these shock mounts that you see on this swinger ..... however I do believe your assistant made these?

With this kind of attitude, I think this will be the last time I use your services for anything. You want to call me out on something, do so directly. This is NOT very professional.

Whoa, everyone shares and borrows ideas from one another here on this forum, that's what makes this so great. I have lent my ideas and what mods I've included and details for parts and fabrication ideas without any sense of anything owed. I've been repaid 10 fold on the information gained here.

Also if anyone is doing this for profit, and has a legitimate business making parts then shouldn't you have a patent or something for these "unique parts"? Even if parts are similar in scope and use, the monetary value is small in comparison to the Camaraderie which is the premise of this forum. To Be exact, "quality of affording easy familiarity and sociability".

You both need to chill out.

Jim, I do not have to buy anything from Jim (JJam), but have done so to show my support to him in times where I was handcuffed and needed to focus on and prioritize other things in my customer's builds. I could had gone somewhere else, but I didn't. My number one priority is my customers and meeting a schedule I have committed to. If this is what I should expect (pettiness) in what could had been a possible business relationship, then I am done pursuing that possibility, and will go elsewhere when and if I need to source parts to meet my requirements. I am only aligning myself with positive thinkers, and do not have time or patience for drama. This is MY business that I am building, built on trust and honesty ...... and so if this is what I should expect from JJam, then that is it. He made his comment openly here .... so who knows where else he's "called me out" without merit. As far as Camaraderie, I have always been open and willing to share ideas on here .... and have plenty of friends on here who know I'd never try to copy something from someone else and pass it on as my own idea. I would had expected Jim to feel the same way, it appears not to be the case.

When I said "You" that was an an open statement meaning all, who want to protect any intellectual property. I understand, I have the same issues with my helmet painting business, I don't copy peoples designs, but there are elements of what the customer likes and provides and some of what I like and provide, that may be similar to other artists. Flames are flames, gears are gears, stripes are stripes etc., That would be like claiming those are my flames you should have checked with me 1st?

Like I said the price of the parts in question aren't worth losing a relationship over, it's not worth it and I agree if there are any issues on either side, pick up the phone and talk it out.

Patents, ha! This reminds me of the time a delegation of Honda lawyers paid Cagiva a visit after Ducati released the 916. Honda we're going to remind them of their ownership of the patent on single sided swing arms which they paid dearly for. The Cagiva guys received them in their office and listened to what they had to say. After the Honda lawyers finished the Cagiva guy beckoned him over to look out the office window and out to the car park below. And there laid out before them were rows of old Vespas and Lambrettas_all_with_single sided swingarms!

+1 on Nunzio's comments. The two of you have collaborated in one way or another on a couple of successful projects now. We all help each other out here and it isn't worth losing a friendship over something like this. Pick up the phone and talk it through.

Darren I guess that I should have pm'd you but after what I read. You made this sound like it was all you.

I am thankful for your props on Facebook but when the story got to the magazines which would have really helped me. Everybody was mentioned except JES BUILT. I will admit. This got me a bit butt sore. I still never said anything because I'm not really out for glory or a big pay check. I'm here because it's my passion. I only ask for gentlemen's credit on what I have given.
http://www.bikebound.com/2017/01/15/honda-cb1100r-restomod/

Once I read the "I fabricated" and how you worded it (which came across to me as your design) I got a bit upset.

There are no such things as patents in this game we play. Only gentleman's acknowledgements. That's where I felt dissed. This isn't fun and games for me anymore. It's how I make my living. I openly share any information to anyone. Even people who will never spend a dime my way. I do this because of this website and all of the people who have shared their experiences. It's what made my business.

That's all I have to say on this and am sorry for disrupting the flow of traffic.

Peace, Jim

I have learned a lot from both of you watching your projects. Your race build a couple years back was really inspiring Jim. Seeing Darrens builds can make a person happy and envious at the same time. Hoping you both continue on in your great passion!

As far as the "bikebound" article is concerned, I do not have complete control over what they decide to list on their website. They were told, they didn't list your name, end of story. However, on the largest online motorcycle community, here you go, very clearly stated (and I told you I even gave you exposure) >>>> http://blog.motorcycle.com/2016/12/05/motorcycle-news/db-customs-latest-honda-cb1100rd/

If we are knit picking, where have you given my company exposure? Did you post links of my builds to highlight parts you built for them, listing my company? That's what I thought ....

How about this, how about you go to every single picture or post you have made on facebook and on here to show the pieces "you fabricated" and then give credit on every single "relevant" picture / post to Brent Hyde (Captain) for using his designs or for taking inspiration from what he has done to solve many of the engineering challenges associated with these bikes. There are hundreds of posts, where you "fabricated" pieces and didn't give him credit. Maybe he deserves a royalty for all the parts you have fabricated and sold using the inspiration and direction he has given you. Hypocrisy at it's best right here ....

Just another small update. Engine is out and disassembled. Frame is coated. Bodywork is with painter. Next up is to prep the engine components for coating and reassembly. Once motor is back in I can set-up my chain line and the bracing on the swingarm.

I just love my painter. All paint, no vinyl. Not done yet but you get the idea.

....... and yes the CB750F is intentionally over lapping the side cover stripe, not like OEM, but just like on Freddies SBK.

I also purchased and installed a vapor blasting system along with a high cfm air compressor to run it. The entire engine is now prepped and ready for paint.
