Tom's Shop Now Open Again!

Some of you probably knew that I had my right hip scoped last month in an effort to clean up a couple of labrum and cartilage tears. Unfortunately, the hip was a mess and the procedure was unsuccessful. Since then, the past month has been a nasty lesson in pain management. It all came to a head earlier in the week when I realized that I wouldn't be able to walk or work if something wasn't done soon. Fortunately, my surgeon got me a slot next Monday, 3/7, for a complete hip replacement. On that day I'll say goodbye to a joint that has more than paid for itself after 44 years of long distance running.

While I recoup, I'll be forced to stay out of the shop. I was able to finish most of the work that I had in the queue, but not all of it. (sorry Rick) I'm hoping that within 3-4 weeks I'll be able to get back in the swing of things. I'm sorry if this will dampen anyone's restoration plans, but right now, I have to do the right thing.

The good news is that I'll be able to ride before the end of April and the spring NE ride should be no problem.

Hip surgery is fairly routine nowadays, within a relatively short time the whole thing should turn into little more than a memory, like my first one did. I'm hoping to get the other one done next month.

Sorry to hear the scope didn't work . Good luck with the total . The 7th is a good day, the wife goes in for her second total knee replacement . The first was 10years ago and has been very good for her . We have experience with these , as I had both mine replaced in the last 18 months . Mine have not been as kind to me and hopefully when she has recovered we'll work on mine again .

Nice move to head south Chris, I'll join ya and hoist a couple for Tom and a speedy recovery bro...things don't always go according to plan......kinda like with our bikes. The total replacement will do the trick!!

Extra curricular activities do have their negatives(mine was tennis, baseball, basketball, and just plain old arthritis). Multiple injections have delayed my knee replacement for 4 years now.

Bo Knows Hip Replacements..

And so does my dad! My dad had one years ago, 1991-92(he crashed an ultralight). He was up and around in no time! Has never had a problem with it.

My hip replacement surgery went well on Monday. It was a bit rough recovering that night, due to the shock it puts your body through, but that was to be expected. Since then, daily recovery has been accelerating. I was discharged from the hospital yesterday and today I'm moving around with crutches or a walker like a pro. I can actually walk pretty well with neither, but everything has to strengthen up before I can toss them altogether. Pain is now minimal and I think I might be done with the strong stuff. Occasional Tylenol may be all that I'll need now.

I have in-home PT starting today and because I've already been doing the exercises, I think the therapist will be quite pleased with how well I'm doing already. This was an anterior type replacement, which is done from the front and is less invasive than the more conventional methods. No muscles were cut and the incision is only around 4". It's healed up nicely so far and no more bandages are needed.

For me, this is nothing short of a miracle. I owe a lot of it to the skill of my surgeon and much of it to all of you out there with your good thoughts and prayers. It's so good to be free of the tremendous pain I had to deal with for 2 months.

I can't wait to get back in the shop, but I'll take it easy and wait until I get the official green light.

The post is titanium, the femural head is ceramic, and I believe that the socket is polyester. Life span of this new joint is 20-25 years if I don't beat on it. Cycling, brisk walking, eliptical, and non-impact exercise is encouraged, so that's the plan. I'm done running - 44 years was enough.

Tom, great news on the successful surgery and early recovery.
Cycling is an excellent, fun exercise. Maybe ask your PT about rowing.
