CB1100F 12 yrs Sitting issues..

Ok I bought a bike that "ran this summer" after sitting 12 years outside.

I live a long ways from where the bike is. I want to send of the carbs to get refurbished. Any "Best" place to send them?

Anybody / Shop in Up State NY who can go through the bike for me to have it road worthy by next summer?

I'd like to have valves adjusted, carbs done, forks, brake lines etc. done.

Bike has 39,000 miles on it.

There's several really great members up your way. The carbs can go to Headless (Cary), and he'll do as much as you'd like and they'll come back like new....

Where in upstate NY is the bike? I don't know of any members here that do this professionally but I can look at local shops if the bike is near to me.

I'm thinking I will definitely farm out the carbs to someone who does them all the time & knows how.

I have a call into a Honda dealer for the rest.

They sold the bike new.

I'm thinking they can handle most of the other things.

Not near me but good luck with the local dealer. Brake and fork rebuilding has not changed much but they might be happy to send the carbs out.

Not sure I'd let a dealer near any of my older Hondas. Actually, I'm positive I wouldn't. Smile

Most of the mechanics working there weren't born yet when these bikes were new. Also, a dealer is going to charge you $80-$90 an hour and list price for parts. We can walk you through many of the repairs you'll need to do and when you're done, you'll be a lot more self-sufficient in keeping your baby running.

Mike Nixon (www.themotorcycleproject.com) is an expert with these carbs. I've used him several times to overhaul carbs for me and the results were impressive to say the least.

If it were me, then I would also look into CBX-tras (full disclosure - he is my brother).

He is a Randakk certified carb re-builder and on that web page you can see the "BEFORE" of that blue CB1100F and the "AFTER" in red a few months later.

Finally, don't be surprised when that HONDA dealer eventually says they cannot complete the work on your bike because it is too old and they really aren't familiar with it. Find a Honda specialist.

Had a salesman trying to pitch the new CB1100F that has been sitting on the showroom (unsold) for 2 summers. They dropped the price several times. I told him my old 1981 bile was much better and sportier looking. He told me I was stuck in the past and I told him to look at the Ducati sitting a few rows over. I'd buy that waaaaaaaaaaay before I would buy the new CB1100F. He started to tell me how bad my bike was until I showed him a picture of it and Todd's Bike on the Home page here. He said "oh" those are nice. Not another word about the CB1100F on the showroom as we moved along to ATV's. Twisted Evil

Here is my 2¢, take it for what it worth.

I would think any repair shop could do the wheels, sprockets/chain, brakes, and forks, especially if you supply the parts and a service manual, not much there they haven't dealt with before. You can get the brake master cylinder/caliper rebuild kits from tomk1960/CBX-tras and CBX-tras can supply Speigler SS brake lines, get All-Balls or Honda wheel bearings and seals. Forks are a bit trickier than normal 750f/900f forks but they can be rebuilt as well (TRAC forks have extra seals and bits that complicate the rebuild if you do it right). All-Balls works for the seals and Honda can get many of the parts (but some are NLA so sourcing means you need to looks DSS (UK) or CMS (NL)) but if they are in decent shape you can deal with them later.

The big deal is finding all the replacement parts, it takes time but tomk1960 can help with replacement turn signals, have the brake rotors sent to Truedisk for resurfacing, add the new tires/brake pads/chain/sprockets and the bike should be plenty safe to ride. I would be nice to verify the engine works before pouring money into the other items.

It will take some time so I don't know that a dealership is the best place but if they are willing and have an older master mechanic on the staff then it could be done.

Of course the bike is located in the middle of nowhere (sorry Phil) so there are not a lot of options without moving it. Have you considered just shipping the bike and managing this from MT?

If CT isn't to far away? Take it to J.R. CBxtras. A mechanic at a shop won't know all the ins and outs that we now know about these bikes.

It looks like progress has been made & stuff is getting ready to be shipped various directions to be made good as new.

Pretty thankful for the help & appreciate the various messages I get pointing me in the right directions.
