A while back I mentioned that I had found someone who did top notch paint work at a very fair price. Several of you were interested in what my tank, side covers, etc. would look like when they came back, so here's the link:
The link to the company is http://www.classiccyclerestoration.com/ Paul Owens is the guy I dealt with and I couldn't be happier. In the meantime, I've been powder coating everything else on the bike that was originally painted. When I'm done, I'll post some pictures of the bike completed. |

How did they do the graphics, were they painted on? or did they put them on in vinyl and clear over them? |

Thanks! The pics don't do the paint job justice. The black is deep and shiny like a marble.
The graphics were a decal kit that my painter applied on top of the base coat and then he applied 2 coats of clear over everything. Ever seen how the decals are applied? It's not for the faint of heart - a bit tricky and requiring some experience, soapy water, and a heat gun. I saw an online video showing how it's done and I was glad that someone else did it for me! |

Looks great!!
How much did they charge (ballpark)? Did you have to pay for the decals separately or did they include them in their work? |

Not sure if his charges ended up being different, but here is what they say on their Web site:
| Classic Cycle Restoration wrote: |
How much does your service cost?:
The average cost is anywhere from $350 to $600. This includes the paint, decal, labor and shipping it back to you. We have been told that we are too cheap, but we believe in providing quality work at a reasonable price. As long as we stay busy, then we are still in business. |
Other information of interest:

How do I pay you guys?
Well, we like your money just as much as the next guy, but don't believe in taking payment untill the job is done. When we're finished we'll let you know and send you a pic via email. You can pay us through Paypal or just send an old fashioned money order or cashiers check.
What is your turn around time?
Usually 21 days and it's back on your door step. Most of the time it is way before that but we like to give ourselves an extra week just incase we get swamped. |

The bodywork looks great. If you have a link for the video I sure would appreciate it. I am getting ready to paint mine.
Thanks,

The paintwork really looks nice. If $350-$600 is all they charge, that's a hell of a deal. |

The price I ended up paying was in the range they mentioned, including all decals and shipping both ways. Paul is going to raise his prices somewhat, because they finally realized that they were too cheap. In my opinion, the same job would still be a bargain at $800, since I can't paint and wouldn't dare mess with decals. Between paint and decals, there is at least $300 in material costs. They had to remove all the old decals and prep everything before they started painting, and there was wet sanding and buffing involved between coats. There's a substantial amount of labor. The bottom line is you get what you pay for.
The turnaround time was a little over a month - mainly because I told him to take his time.
Their payment plan is reasonable. They take nothing up front and you don't pay until the work is done and they send you pictures of the finished product. I've used them twice now and am totally satisfied with the quality and price. I'll use them again on my next project. My goal is always to restore a bike to "like new" stock condition. It's a lot easier when you have guys like them doing the paint work. |

Not to bump an old thread, but seemed a good place to ask a couple questions...
Noticed you're from my neck of the woods and was wondering who you used for blasting/powdercoating? Was it someone local in MA or did you send them off.. I'm about to start a rebulid (finally got the other two on the road and now can do the project) and was looking for a recommendation.. Local perferred but anyone with a good reference would work...
Also how did you prep the tank for shipping?
Thanks!

Don,
As far as tank prep goes, there's very little to do prior to shipping one to Paul. You have to drain it thoroughly and allow it to dry out, then just pack it up carefully and ship it off. Use a big box with lots of padding and you'll be in good shape.
PM me if you'd like more information on PC work, or do a little searching here on the forum and you'll find lots of info and pictures.

Paul Owens and Mark are partners......Paul painted my CBX...
He is a great guy and does what you tell him to do.....
This was not a perfect paint job.....8.5 out 10.....but for $710....I was more than cool.
Peace,
Jebby |

Thanks John......it means a lot coming from a perfectionist like yourself.....
One thing to add:
Paul and Mark use only cbgrapics (AFE) graphics.......and Paul has owned CBX's.
My decal placement and attention to detail was perfect......Honda could not have done
a better job.
I once asked Paul how he made any money doing this......he stated having vendor discounts and
high volume keeps profits high.....
I added up how much it would cost to do the job myself.....and decided that I would not pay myself
$200 to paint my own stuff!

Hey Tom,
My project has been slow going and I now have all the parts ready to go to paint and the site is no longer active. Do you know if Paul is still in business and if not is there someone whom you recommend?
Thanks!

Mark did my 900F pieces this past winter, here is a teaser.
I'll shoot him an email and see if he is taking new work. What do you need to have done, I know he hates doing the red 1100F since it is impossible for him to get a good match. |

I talked to him and he said he wasn't doing any 11Fs no matter what color . He was only doing CBX and the older 750s, which I took to mean the SOHC 750s. |

I'll post here when I hear back from him. |

Along with the 2 color and all the extra masking . He did a red 11F set for me a couple of years ago, was hoping to get 2 Blue sets done . |

I heard back from Mark at CCR and he is no longer painting.
Maybe we need a list of reputable painters to go withe list of machinists. |

I have a guy here in New Braunfels......he re-cleared my CBX parts and did the Black CBX for Ken.....and let me just say it
is Nunzio quality......
He would be anywhere between $1200 and $1500.....but this isn't Kansas anymore.....it is show quality.
PM me for more info.....I just spoke to him...his name is Eddie....and he is happy to oblidge.
Dale.....he could do your two blue sets.....maybe get a better deal on two.
These pics were straight out of the gun......he wet sanded and rubbed it after for a mirror liquid finish.
He clears the parts....then applies the graphics....then lays more clear on it.....
You cannot get any nicer....

My tank and tail after Eddie put three more coats over Paul's paint job.....Paul used a repair clear that shrunk after 18 months.....
Eddie just built a new shop....he will be ready to paint in three weeks.....
