There is also a video on youtube from the same company with Jay Leno in it. Go figure...
I was wondering what the deceleration would feel like on one of these bikes, since there are no gears to shift.

Cool bike .... I am wondering if some sort of generator could be designed that would "help" charge the batteries as you ride on those long distance runs, maybe driven off of the rear wheel. Have the drive chain on the left side and another chain or belt on the right side turning a generator  |

I thought of that as a kid...a perpetual motion machine!
It would help but would the parasitic loss be worth it?

I was wondering about that too Darren. There has to be a way to generate some power from all that motion. I sent that video to one of the electrical engineers here at work, I'll ask him for his thoughts.
That was cool seeing the part at the N.Y Safety Track. I'm still kicking myself for not making the effort to get there that day.

It does when the Alternator is told to provide Amps....then it is not so easy to spin......
Jump start a dead car and the idle will go down on the host car because of the amps being sucked up by the guest battery.
Einstein knew this...there is no free lunch.....it is impossible to use energy to create the same amount....something always gets lost in the mix......
I bet it would help.....but a regenerating motor is a better idea I think.....

You cannot generate more power than you use, not even close, the transducers are not even close to 100% efficient. If they were 110% efficient, you could actually generate power for free, or drive for free. But there is enough loss in just the wire to prevent 100% efficiency, unless supercooled, and even then, the motor will still not be 100% efficient.
The best you can do is have the drive motor operate as a generator, and generate power during deceleration, to slow the vehicle and replenish a bit of power. Hybrid vehicles do this now. If you were to add a secondary alternator, to operate with the primary electric motor, you just suffer the inefficiency twice, once at the motor, then again at the alternator, and also add the extra weight.

You're kidding, right? Until you energize it.
Why do you suppose some of the older cars had 2 V belts to drive the alternator.
Today, the alternator uses the widest serpentine belt on the motor to drive all the electrical components they're putting in cars.
They had a typical GM alternator driven by a bicycle at the science museum here. It was hooked up to power a TV. You have to crank your ass off just to get it to glow.
There's a reason a lot of drag racers run a total loss ignition system........that's because they don't want the alternator robbing any horsepower so, they leave it off.

IF it is as quick as they say ,i would love to see a timed lap against a regular super bike with the same professional rider (ala top gear stig),
the tesla car didnt fair so well (in a similar test).
but no doubt its the future, but not in ten years tho. |

The science center closed a few years ago. Maybe it'll come back after Detroit gets out of bankruptcy.

And all for only 73K!? Without ABS......................... Guess the regular people will have to wait for it to be more mainstream. I almost emailed them to ask how they justified the RS model price jump of 23kish, but decided it was worth neither the time nor the effort. |
