well, bought an 1100f and now comes the fun part. Its not in bad shape but definitely is in need of some loving. While I have tons of questions, Ive been doing pretty good searching through the wealth of info you guys have accumulated here. My plan is to clean it up real nice and get it back to stock(ish). Then ride the bejeezus out of it.

After sifting through a few pages of debates, Im going to toss the cheesy foam pods that came on it and go back to stock airbox and stock carb settings. For me its a matter of simplicity. I just want to make it reliable. This thing is fun enough as it is for my purposes.

since this is my first post (and I am far from an expert) I expect a bit of hazing, but here it goes anyway. I want to try and find a stock airbox that is as close to new as possible. Im assuming this wont be found at my local honda dealer. Is this just a watch ebay and hope for the best situation? There is one on there now for 90 bucks, the condition is hard to tell. Does that seem reasonable to you guys?

Thanks for all the info you all have posted here, Ive been spending most of my free time the past couple weeks sorting through it and studying the manual. Hopefully have this thing back up and running soon.

Dave

Wow Dave, nice first post and complete with pictures! beerchug

You'll find better deals on the air box than the one listed on ebay right now. Try posting in the wanted/for sale section and see if anyone here has one to offer.
Pull the carbs and make sure you go back to the stock 122 main and 38 slow jets. And while she's apart, CHECK THOSE VALVE CLEARANCES!!!
Welcome to the Funhouse and congrats on your new ride!

thank for the tips.

already have the carbs off. they are a bit grimey so a good cleaning is in order. Have a rebuild kit on its way. I'll check the jets then. checking the valve clearances is my project for saturday. good catch on the grab bars..i didnt notice. haha. still a lot to learn.

only did some short riding on it right after i bought it because i couldnt help myself, even though the number two carb was leaking pretty good..but Im already hooked. Had a frankenstein '78 cb750 a few years back that was my daily driver for three years or so that i always regretted selling. When I came across this one I couldnt pass it up. Especially now that I have the time (and garage) to fix it up right, and keep it around for hopefully a long time.

Congrats on the new bike Dave, and welcome to the group. It looks like a previous owner had some chrome plating done on that baby, eh? If you ever want to return those pieces to stock black condition, there are plenty of spares out there.

I doubt you'll find a "like new" air box, but someone here on the forum will have decent one. If you glass bead it and then wipe on some Mother's back to black, it will look like new afterwards. (That handy tip was courtesy of Swiftnick.)

Keep us posted on your progress.

Tom
P.S. Are those grab bars chrome or black chrome? Hard to tell from the pictures, but they were originally black chrome.

yeah the previous owner did a bunch of chrome plating. All of which is now flaking like mad. I was reading another thread on here from a member who does powder coating and those parts that were posted look pretty nice. I definitely want to go back to the original black. Once i figure out what all Im going to do I'll start looking into that. for now my goal is get it running and ride it for a bit before I do a major strip down.

And they are not original to the 11F...but if you are going to get some of the other chromed pieces powder coated black, I'd do those too.
Those carbs look like they need a good ultrasonic cleaning and rebuild.
I saw a complete set ready to bolt on, on ebay yesterday, but nobody bid on them. I think the BIN was $350.

Have fun with that beast!!

Cheers!

You found the right place for keeping your bike on the road in top shape, everything you could want to know is either already here or just a quick question away.

If you arent set on using the stock carbs and airbox check out the mikuni carb swap, and i just happen to have a set for sale ready to go. Smile

Either way good luck getting it up and running smoothly.

Black chrome grab bars are original on the U.S. models.
