I do not know how fast the car that hit the coupple was going but the dash cam in the pic showed 78 mph on the slow police car and the other police car blew past him. No lights, no siren, just idiots behind the wheel. If you watch the speed, he slowed as he saw the car ahead, the other car never lifted. Pretty sure the speed limit on that road was not that high.

The officer shouldn't have been speeding.....the teens shouldn't have been drinking.....

Another case of "anything can happen".

What would have been the story had the two poor souls had lived?

That just sucks.... Sad Perfect storm of shitty circumstances.....and poor choices....

The fact the 19 yrs were drinking has nothing to do with this at all.

It is just a through out in hopes to defer guilt.

You can't tell me these 2 people died because they were drinking?

Of course it does add to the alcohol related accident stats.

Couple years back a police officer here was killed by a drunk driver.

The police officer was hit broadside on I-75.

Yes the guy that hit him was drunk and speeding, but the police officer also drove from the shoulder of the right hand side of the south bound lanes to cross through the median when he was hit.

Thing was there was an exit less than a mile up the road were he could have exited the highway like he should have.

No...not what I meant....it is just paradoxial in a way....just adds to the finger pointing....something for the lawyers to hang the teens up on a hook with....it is just sad...

The teens are dumb asses for drinking and driving!
Everyone knows driving and alcohol doesn't mix.

The Police Officers are even bigger dumb asses for speeding unsafely and without cause!
If anyone should know better about what careless driving can do, it should be the Police Officers.
Absolutely no excuse, and is a poor example of what a Police Officer should be.

This is part of why I believe the Police should be able to be videotaped in public.
Videos keep the Police honest, accountable, and can show where extra training is needed.
If I ran a Police Department I would want to know when I have Officers that have poor conduct and what exactly they did.
I don’t think videos can make the Department look bad, unless the Department tries to cover it up.
I would be proud of any Police Department that was honest and forthcoming with information, and fired Officers that had poor conduct.
It just proves that ANYONE with power must be held accountable, as we all have a sinful nature and can’t be trusted 100% of the time.
Iron sharpeneth Iron!

I'd beg to differ, to turn across in front of two speeding cars - even with their "blues and two's" off was either inexperience or alcohol or more likely a combination of both - a huge misjudgement by BOTH drivers involved.

The lads misjudgement was only to be in the wrong car at the wrong time (and sounds like he wasn't wearing his seatbelt) but I don't think a $2.5m payout is justified - I'd say its incredible way to deal with a tragedy.

As far as the public being able to video the police is concerned, I think it will eventually be unavoidable for the police to be caught on video more and more as cameras become so prevalent. I think the videos that these police dash cams, that we pay for, in the cruisers should all be publicly available as routine public watchdog data as well. The technology exists for this video to be systematically and routinely uploaded and stored and available almost immediately as it is taken daily. But I think it should be kept in a publicly accessible place, not hidden behind closed doors. We the people...

Pisani was going about 65 mph when Anderson shot past him on the right; the speed limit on that stretch of the Boston Post Road is 40 mph.

Anderson has been charged by State Police with two counts of second-degree manslaughter in the teens' deaths. He will be arraigned Nov. 24 in Derby Superior Court and has been suspended with pay.

State law requires police officers traveling without lights and sirens, and not dispatched on a call, to obey prevailing speed limits, the chief said.

The video does not give a true impression of Anderson's speed because it is being taken from a vehicle that is also traveling very fast, Krakowski's lawyer said.

"Even if my client was the passenger, we don't intend to file suit against the driver," Halloran said. "We will be going after the party who is responsible for the collision.''

Halloran’s lawsuit alleged Milford police officers had a history of speeding, and in fall 2010 Mello suspended a city police officer five days without pay, and prohibited him from driving a police vehicle for nine months after an investigation revealed the officer reached speeds consistently over 100 miles per hour on several emergency calls.

Wynne also alleged in his lawsuit that city officers routinely speed.

The cruiser that Pisani was driving on June 13 is one of only two in the Milford department's 25-car patrol fleet equipped with a dashboard camera, Mello said. The department plans to use a $79,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to equip seven more patrol cars with cameras, he said.

The camera, manufactured by I-COP, constantly captures data, Capt. Tracy Mooney said, but only records it when a cruiser's lights and siren are activated.

Mello said that the camera has the ability to go back 60 seconds from the moment the lights and siren are switched on and store video from that point.

Pisani switched on his vehicle's emergency devices when he saw the crash happen in front of him, which preserved the moment of impact on video.

Police Officer Jason Anderson was driving 94 to 95 mph when his police cruiser slammed into a car carrying two Orange teens, killing them both, and was at "100 percent of the accelerator pedal," according to an arrest warrant affidavit released Wednesday.

So they say the "teens" had been drinking, but they don't say what their BAC was, or how altered they really were. It doesn't seem too much of a stretch to me for somebody stone cold sober to have gotten into that same accident though, with the fuzz driving like jackasses doing over 90MPH in a 40 zone for no apparent reason, with total and utter disregard for other's lives and well being, and without any safety procedures. If a citizen was doing that, they'd take his license, even without an accident such as this. For a public officious officer to do so is ridiculous and he should be locked up with some grieving parents for a few years.

A huge misjudgement for sure. But let's face it even experienced drivers might have a hard time judging an oncoming vehicle at almost 100mph at night.

+2 on the last two posts.

The police should be held to a higher standard that the public. They were breaking the law and caused the death of two other people. They should have been criminally charged. If the two teenagers who were drinking had caused the death of a police officer, they would have been charged for that.

Videos could be used to convict or defend the police, depending on whether they act outside of the law or within. I think it is a good idea to video them.

I'd not disagree (well, except maybe some don't seem to allow the passing of time to build experience) & I'd not mitigate the speeding driver's actions by the young drivers inexperience or diminished abilities either - both drivers failed to take into acount their interactions with other road users and the girl and passanger paid a heavy price. One should have known better by age and job experience - the other is something I'll have to come to terms with in a few years when my daughters that age.

I'd imagine driving at that time of night on that kind of road is not different here than there - you do have to have your wits about you for what the other drivers doing and, just like being on a bike, assume they are out to kill you.

I agree the police officer should be charged just like any other person - I'd find it a little harder to justify saying they should be video'd and scruitinzed all the time....they might just decide that's what they should be doing to us every time we drive or rise and we'd soon find the roads a lot quieter if EVERY misjudgement gets used against us.

I'm going through that right now with my son. He just got his permit in Dec. What he doesn't know could fill a book. The real downside is that he doesn't even know that he doesn't know.

And you're correct experience is crucial.

I only too well remember what I was like at that age...how to instill that insight about what they don't know is what now truly scares me about raising children to young adults - they need to learn by making their own mistakes but the price can be this.

Case in point Bloomfield Hills police officer

Quote:
The prosecutor could not obtain any type of felony conviction because the jury had doubts about
the guilt of Joshua Campbell. The jury decided that Officer Gary Davis's negligence contributed
to his death. Shortly before the accident the officer had arrested another drunk driver on south
bound I-75 in Troy, Michigan. After handcuffing and placing the drunk on the right side of the
back seat without a seat belt the officer drove off without using a seat belt. He was talking and
had just made an ethnic joke about the drunk prisoner when he was broadsided. The drunk who
was severely injured in the accident testified in court that the officer was looking at him when
struck by the other car. During the same time that the officer was talking and joking he was
trying to go from the right shoulder across the three lanes of south bound I-75 in order to get to
the emergency turn around. Apparently he felt that he could save some time in getting to the
police station by going on north bound I-75. The prosecutor's expert witness who reconstructed
the accident stated that there was no visual obstruction between officer Davis and the car that
eventually struck him. Officer Davis was seven seconds into the maneuver and traveling at
about nine miles per hour when hit by the Ford Focus. There was no court testimony to indicate
that the officer took any evasive actions to avoid being struck by the Ford Focus. I conclude that
Officer Davis did not look before he started the cross over maneuver, and did not look during the
seven seconds while he was making the fatal turn. The jury acquitted Joshua Campbell because
it felt that Officer Davis was negligent, and his negligence contributed to the accident. The jury
held Officer Davis to the highest of standards, because he was a police officer. The jury did not
have to know why Officer Gary Davis was negligent.
The key question is why Officer Gary Davis did not look before or during

http://tagolden.com/garydavis.pdf

Comletely sober police officer.

Don't like to speak ill of the dead, but the cop f'd up. He a trained police officer (which assumes driving skills are part of that training) pulle out in front of a speeding car.

The fact that the 2 19yrs had been drinking, doesn'ts mean they were in any way responsible for their own deaths. It is the fault of the out of control cop

I tend to agree Tom, and I don't condone drinking and driving at any level.

As Judge Judy would say, "but for the fact (proximate cause) the cop was speeding this accident likely would not have happened."

If your going to drive around at close to 100mph on regular streets something bad is going to happen.

Cop is now unemployed, and it happened on Boston Post Road which has a limit of 35-40 in that area. Kids didn't need to die.
