Mango, where did you see this? Nothing on N.Y.S.DMV or AMA website.
$1000 sounds like Federal noise or emission...any more info?? |

I didn't find the article. This might be a New York City initiative where any non-stock system is assumed in violation. Policy like this allows a ticket with no sound reading and no subjective testimony required from the cop that writes it.
New York City also took an aggressive position on Motorcycles in HOV lanes that was outside Federal law on HOV lanes. Was featured in AMA newsletter where a woman challenged NYC on this and won. Don't know if the AMA will back a challenge on this.

Even if only 5 boroughs what happen when you go from Long Island to Manhattan and you park you ride? The mayor wants to fill the budget gap with the sell of the bikes. |

Like anything else if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time you could get it. Haven't heard anything else.
Highway Patrol writes tickets. If NYC Highway stops you for another offense you could wind up with an extra piled on. I would think that squids would be more vulnerable to that than middle aged guys. |

It shouldn't stick. Just like if my bike meets my state's inspection requirements, but not another state's, they can't ticket you when you are in that other state.
I like the idea that pops up in the state Assembly from time to time of separating NY into two states. West NY will be anything north of Westchester county... Since most of my tax dollars head down to the city anyway... |

That's what we thought about the new Florida penalty enhancements for vertical tags.
Nope... the economy sucks and the public agencies are feeling the pinch. It's a revenue grab and I know of several cruiser guys who have been handed $1,000 tickets for vertical sidemount tags.
Everyone thought they would be fine because they are in plain view and not tucked up behind the tire like the squids do to hide them. |

that is a nice idea but not true. We carry you. NYC and Long Island carries the rest of the state. Sort of an affirmative action deal. |

That is certainly excessive amount of money for an equipment violation. Almost Criminal...too bad. |

I am sorry if I am speaking out of turn but...
I am completely frustrated with similar scenarios on both sides of our great continent.
Starting to sound a lot like "taxation without representation" again.
Am I wrong? |

Well I am pretty sure NYC gets a significant amount of state money for its infrastructure, the crime, emergency services, welfare, etc. And like it or not NYC is part of New York state so you are all there to carry each other. I have talked to a number of New Yorkers from NYC who seem to think that they are New York state Is that quite common F4FAST, or just the few I have met? |

It's rooted in the squids running from cops.
Squid hides his plate and runs, cop can't do anything if he sees the same bike later because he can't prove it was the same bike that he chased down.
Now, whether he has the right bike or not, the squid gets a $1000 ticket.
The penalties get even worse.
Yes... third offense is a FELONY!

It's a little bit of both.... 40% of American workers pay no taxes.
So we have supposedly equal representation with unequal (or no) taxation.
So those of us who pay taxes get fucked in the ass because of the voting choices and lifestyles of those who pay no or little taxes. |

When you change your pipe you are theoretically "tampering with federal emissions standards" . As silly as that is when you recognize it is a 25 yr old bike with limited replacement options. That is how an equipment fine hits $1000 there. Violating federal emissions laws sounds insidious like you kidnapped the Lindbergh baby.
The plate deal is done to punish squids who do tricks on the street and obscure thier plate by tucking it in to the rear wheel. That means you run, you get away unidentified, So......You have it standing still, you are planning to run and get away, hence the big fine.
Areas in Fla that have large Cruiser events (Harley) , May have other problems with the bikers and seek to disperse the undesirables with drastic penalties to break balls. Yes it pays state bills too.
Just my opinion........ |

I don't think it is possible for anyone (without an accountant) to pay no tax. Sales tax, fuel tax ,telephone tax , electric tax, etc. we all pay.
The people who complain to authorities about bikers are your peers who are taxpayers, don't ride, and don't like the large events. Your rant is way off base.
Poor people have no juice to get things done in Government. |

Bullshit.
They have votes to offer.
What's a vote worth?
In the 2008 races, over 1.3 billion was spent on 130 million votes. 80 million of those votes would not have changed regardless of how much or little was spent.
10 million would not have turned out had the Democrat not been so charismatic (compared to 2004 voter turnout). |
