Its always been a dream of mine to tour the US on a bike when I retire. I'm sure I am not unique with that dream but after going over this last new england ride I dont know how long I'll be able to do this. My body is really complaining and my head isnt in the right place either. I plan on making some changes because I am way too young for this to happen to me, and if I feel like this now, how bad am I going to feel in 20 years?

I guess I just wanted to let everyone know they should not waste any time fullfilling their dreams, you dont know what can transpire to snatch them away from you. Maybe I need to split the country into pieces and get going on multiple rides and not worry about doing one, long, continuous journey.

I am reminded of Andys dream of getting into a WWII spitfire by a certain age and having that dream come true. That was a real heartwarmer. Right now all my dreams involve scenery and roads, and new places to eat breakfast that I've never been to before. Do we have a network of guys on here who would be able to offer a soft spot for a sleeping bag and a roof to sleep under for one night? It would be pretty cool to hop scotch the country staying with an F'er for the night and moving on the next day. If anyone is ok with that let me know with a PM. Maybe I could pull this off in '08. By the way, while I dont have extra beds, I do have a couch that anyone going by this way is welcome to fight the dog over. (you'll win).

I'll gladly provide a spot to rest if you ever come south..I'll even throw in a couple of cold ones (alcoholic or not) and fire up the grill. I may be from the Northeast...but this southern hospitality has always been part of my life. Y'all come on by, ya hear!

Alsaka is completely on the other side of the continent but you have a place to stay if you make it this far North and West.

Well Larry if your ever up this way for even a week-end, whether alone or with some of the guys my wife always has at least one of the spare bedrooms set up for visitors and some flowers to the missus would break any barriers as to getting the other rooms ready as well.
I don't know if the steaks will be as big as those we had on the Spring ride but they will come a close second. The roads up here in cottage country are twisty and we could well demonstrate what a 32km stretch of curves with no houses or stops can do for ones health and vitality!

This is Karl and me last summer getting lost on the back roads.

Respect would say that I check with the wife, but you can count on a soft/warm bed, some grilled goodness and a couple barley man soda's if you come round Northern California.

You got a spot here any time you need it. If this catches on maybe others could do the same, I would'nt mind doing something like this myself in the future.

Larry,..... my wife, myself and 2 best friends (4 bikes total) did this in 04, 4700 miles in 13 days! It was a life changing experience. Everyone who can, must! Saw the painted desert and Grand Canyon in AZ,Vegas to Barstow to Sierra Nevada's to Reno and then home to the midwest via the Colorado Rockies! Each and every day it was like waking up on a differant planet, I am getting chills just thinking about it.....make a plan and do it, I am 50, a chronic pain sufferer from a spinal injury and it gets harder and harder to stay on 2 wheels for 100 miles at a stretch....I made myself complete that trip cause this is the only chance I will ever have. I ride whenever I can cause this is our only chance, time keeps ticking........ director

best of luck,
Kevo

Larry,

As an ex masshole who found the good life out west, always have a place to stay at my house. Just south of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park, and have great riding any direction.

Invite goes out to any F'er passing through. Only thing I ask in return is help fixing whatever is wrong with my bike at the time Very Happy

We've got a guest bed available for you here in the Milwaukee area (currently Waukesha). Even if we have to downsize and lose the guest room there's always the recliner (my favorite snooze spot). We don't stay in a house for long, but we do usually have a guest room though.

If you ever get south and want a place to stay near the Southern most point in the USA, we always have a spare bedroom ready. You would not be the first F'er and I seriously doubt the last to come by for a visit.

And the same for those of you who want to come to my end of the earth.

I also have another idea, for international visitors: house and bike exchange.

Here is my post from the Varadero site:

"Prompted by the idea that by definition everyone's own country is exotic to a foreigner, I have searched the site to see if I could find any discussion of house swaps/exchanges. I did not find any, but....

The idea is that for a week, or two - or a month, or two - you borrow my house in my country, together with its vehicles, and I borrow yours in your country.

We have friends who do this each year, and who have made many great and lasting friendships. They arrange so that there is some overlap; this is easy for them, as it would be for me, because we own more than one house.

For New Zealanders, the topic is a good one because to take your own vehicle to, say, anywhere in Europe is ridiculously expensive. The house and vehicle swap means your expense is only the air travel to the other side of the world, and then food, water (or other liquids), and fuel. Accommodation and vehicle costs are absent. Obviously, we each continue servicing our own mortgages, taxes, etc.

Equally obviously, the idea depends on like being swapped with like, which is why I am floating the idea to fellow Deroists.

My house that I am proposing to swap is a big old place at Russell in the Bay of Islands at the north of New Zealand. (Google it).

There is great coastal scenery, boating, food, the oldest continuously-licensed pub in our country, and so on. Oh - and the area is world-famous for its game fishing - marlin and other billfish, and light game such as kingfish ("light" as in the heaviest I have caught is 23kg...)

The house has a resident car, Nissaan Safari diesel, kayaks, dinghy, surfboards, and a bike or two which in this case would include my Vara. Being in the north of the North Island of NZ, the climate is quite warm year-round (so for example I never need to wear insulated gloves on any bike). You could borrow some of my fishing gear, perhaps, maybe, depending.

I am the only person in my business, so I cannot be away for very long. As I spend most of my time 240 road km south in Auckland, I am happy for any taker to spend longer at Russell than my wife and I would spend at the taker's place.

So, how about it? I am in no rush, but maybe planning for some time in 2008 could start now.

I need to add that I think the idea in a more general sense is a good one, and I started this topic to promote discussion on the general idea, not just a proposal for me. "

Since my CB1100F is in the process of becoming a dedicated race machine, you would have to use the Varadero (or, if solo, my VTR1000, known a "Superhawk" in the USA. Such hardship: the Vara is the Honda equivalent of the Suzuki 1000 V-Strom).

I'm close to Kevoz in Southern Illinois. Mt Vernon, to be precise. X marks the spot at I-64 and I-57. Illinois is painful to ride, but it's a hop to some great roads in SE Missouri.

Lots of kid-hair flying about, but reasonably comfortable.

If you need a spot 1/2 way, more like 2/3's of the way between Fitter & Fee, Knock at my door.

Hell I'll even take time off a ride with you to the next stop.

One guest is fine with my other in San Bernadino Ca.
I might even have a mobile sitting emty in San Gabriel for ahwile.
Actually she is warming up to the guys by pictures and accounts of our rides.
She is a hard one though.
She said today Pappaluker looked like a nice man. Lee looked trustworthy
And she want to fix up Genesound with one of her friends.
Peter and Ray she approves of too.
I think she actually want to ride with us.
On her own bike of course.
Isn`t it fun Rolling Eyes

It looks like a network is building here.
I'm not likely to ever get to the USA, but if any F-er and partner find themselves in South Australia, I have a self-contained private annexe at my place. You might even find a beer or two (Coopers Pale Ale) in the fridge.

Larry.

Like Sport said, "Any F'er has a spot here"...in Montana with me and the wife. Have a trailer that you can crash in or a queen in the house...or you can pick the top bunk of our bunk beds if you want...can sleep 7 F'ers and not one has to sleep on the floor...but also have two couches...and a Garage to keep the F's safe and a bed for them.

If any of you come and we are in our new house...who knows..might have more beds for you.
