I just like pictures of F's going fast

I always like to see photos of F's cranking. My favorites are naturally of the 'real' guys like Baldwin, Pietri, Wise, and (of course!) Spencer. This is one of me near the apex of the third "Attitude" corner at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah, and YES - that's a modern bike behind two vintage bikes!

The modern bike is a Suzuki TL1000 twin running in AHRMA's 'Sound of Thunder' class which ran at the same time as Vintage Superbike did. They had a single wave start and this guy is probably having fun dicing but wondering why he's not in front of us. I got second in my class (the infamous CBX beat me. I was beside him every lap two corners before this 'bad attitude' series but couldn't quite get in front of him. I finished about 4 bike lengths behind him. He'd pull me on the straights and I'd get it back on the corners. We stayed that way the whole race...)

I'd love to just do a track day one day, dont think I've got the racing bug in me anymore, but just to give it a flex on a track would be cool.

Macman, I'll be at Barbers the 20th (Friday Practice) 21st & 22nd (racing). The CBX will be there along with the guy on the Guzzi and at least one other F. If I win both Vintage Superbike races, I'll win AHRMA's Vintage Superbike HW championship again. The only problem with that is that it isn't a "high probability scenario"... There's one guy (John Staska) who's so much faster. If he shows up to a race vintage superbike he either wins, breaks or crashes. I've won at Barbers before against the guys I need to beat (except Staska - I've never ever beat that guy if he finishes the race) so I'm hopeful but I wouldn't bet any money. I'm solidly in second place in the series and would stay second even if I don't go race at Barbers.

I will have to change back to the silver Yosh pipe as the OMT pipe breaks the 104db limit Barbers has along with installing a new set of tires, rejetting, and fixing a leaky front fork seal. I am considering installing the race tech fork set (stiffer springs and emulators) and bringing the repaired fork set just in case I can't get used to the emulator/spring change on Friday.

Suspension is really loading up in this pic Dennis, you got some major g's going on in this corner. The ground clearance was really going away, it would have set an upper limit on what was possible. Looks like you were not leaing much on the table here. Nice job.

This was a pretty tough corner - it's a quick series of left, right, left turns that crest as you're entering the first left at the top and has a smooth 'G-out' at the bottom which I'm entering. There's probably a 25' elevation change from the top to the bottom which is why in the photo there's nothing on the horizon but the crest of the hill. If I was on the gas hard entering the first left (in second gear) the front would come off the ground so I couldn't enter very aggressive and it was tough to get the bike to flop left-right-left fast enough to go through the corner right. I was countersteering hard enough while entering and exiting the righthander to feel the front push or slide - not sure of the term to describe the feeling of loss of front end traction by trying to transition the front wheel through handlebar inputs.

The bike would settle where it is in the picture and feel good from there on out.

I think you have told me this already but what is John Staska riding for a bike? Is it the light wt GS750 based rig?

yep - the bike is owned by Jerry Berroth, I believe but Staska gets to ride it wherever Jerry takes it. I'd expect him to be at Barbers.

I noticed the white bike behind you is on 17's and what appears to be a GSXR cartridge fork.

Yep, it is a KZ750 of indeterminate year with a bunch of cheater parts on it - the rims, brakes, fork & rear swingarm are from a GSXR600 (or was that a 750?). The forks and wheels plus I think front brakes are not allowed along with missing required rear original type bodywork and seat. He said he was going to disqualify himself after the race. It has a big bore kit of around 810 or 820 (I forget) and big carbs. The bike is tiny. My Honda would pull him bad out of the corners then he'd get it back under brakes. He finished about that distance behind me.

His brakes are much better than yours, although probably about the same in stopping power as legal 41mm piston Lockheeds. The Lockheeds would be more likely to warp the rotors, however. Hard to tell from the pics, forks could be 88-9 gsxr 750 peices, or anyone of several year 600's. Could tell better with a side veiw, but they probably are 600 parts. In either case they are much better than you have, full cartridge Showa stuff. With a little bit of work, they would be the equal to the 10 or 20,000 dollar prototype forks on the Factory Hondas in 82. With brakes, tires, and a fork equal to that thing, your bike would be faster and easier to ride. The 17's are legal if you don't go over 4.5 in the back correct? Lockheeds or something comparable would give you the brakes. We could get a legal fork to be close if the track was not too bumpy. Decent springs and some slightly modified Interceptor damper rods would get you close.

The pipe works (and sounds) excellent. The slip-on spigots that I made worked out well with no leaks, and it doesn't drag anywhere. I am going to have to pull it and put the silver Yosh pipe back on for Barbers though as the OMT pipe is over the 104db limit they have. I'm not sure how much, but the Yosh pipe was measured at 102-103db and the OMT pipe is a LOT LOUDER.

Dennis, I was at Barbers for the WERA nationals the last weekend of September. They had a few wrecks there in the corners, especially coming out of the next to last one before you hit the straight away to the finish line. Three guys wrecked there in 2 different races, one of whom had led the race from the start, and was on the white flag lap when he hit the pavement in that corner. The other wrecks were in the left hairpin curve at the halfway point of the track.

If I make it there for the AHMRA's, and my F'er is out of the shop, I'll stop by and say hi to you at the paddock. Cool
