So here is my '82 900f I got last year.
and here it is after I took the motor out, needs major top end work.
So here it is with the '81 motor with "8,500" miles, so the salvage yard guy says.
So I gotta get the exhaust on, and the carbs. Tighten a few things up, then I will see how the motor is. If all is well I will get a chain and mount the back tire on the rim, then bolt it all together and go for a ride!

Well I am going to put all the stock stuff on right now, until I make sure the motor is good, and it shifts through all 5 gears.
Then I plan on getting a 4into1 exhaust (cobra, but its a little pricy for me), probably leave the carbs stock. Maybe a dyna 2000, a corbin seat, smaller blinkers. I am sure I will think of more. I would love to get some rearsets, some newer wheels, a mono shock setup... U know the basic.
I am still trying to decide if I like that huge stationary fairing!
Ohh, and there is the rusty exhaust hanging behind the fairing. Exhaust will be one of the first things to change... |

Yep I'll take the fairing if your going to "get rid of it"
Up here in the GWN the more air you can block the better.
I even have the right set of 900 headlight ears that you'll need.
Strait swap? I pay shipping? |

Not to sound like a jerk but I would keep the fairing you have then purchase another 1/4 fairing and who knows, in a couple of years you might want to put it on..CowTown is right, blocks some air. Take the pipes and clean them up for now...maybe even paint them black. I have a Pro Sport 4 to 1 pipe now that I am happy with, don't know any better if its worth a crap or not, only been riding the F since July...looking at it last night there is rust up by the heads...so those are coming off and sanding them down myself. Fixing oil leaks now though..I purchased a 1/4 fairing, will have the stock 900F light and bracket F/S pretty soon.
Heres to having a happy purring engine real soon |

Well sorry everyone, but I don't sell stuff for bikes I still have. I like to keep things complete, even if its not on the bike. So the exhaust and fairing will be staying on long island... So I should have gotten the bike running last night, but my uncle came home with his '85 Chevy Pickup at about 8,000 rpms just to keep the truck moving. So we put a tranny in it last night, and the tranny we put it has no 3rd gear!!!
So looks like another tranny is going in there tonight, hopefully we can get it done in a couple of hours. Then I can get something done on the bike.
So everyone keep your fingers crossed about my motor...
<------- heh... |

It Runs!! I need to go through the carbs again, and definitly replace the intake boots. The motor sounds really strong. I finally got to hear what a real DOHC F bike sounds like. I will get pictures up soon! |

F'n skills.... heh
Well here is the latest update! The motor internally sounds great, but I need to rebuild the carbs, and get new intake boots. When I removed my old ones they were all dry and cracked up pretty bad when they came off. Even though they were soaked in wd-40.
[img] [/img]
I can't beileve how shiny the paint still is... and thats not even cleaned up!
Even in 37 degree weather it fired right up! but still doesn't run right, it doesn't want to rev up? but slow engine speeds seem pretty good.
[img] [/img]
How does anyone think the air cleaner not being on is going to affect the way it runs? I don't think it makes that much of a difference, but I did notice some difference with a 750k, it ran a little better with the air cleaner in place.
[img] [/img]
So I am going to rebuild the carbs, and get new intake boots. Get a new air breather, Probably replace the wires and definitly plugs. Then I will go from there. Hopefully I can get it to 8,500-9,000 soon. I can't beileve how good the stock exhaust sounds?!? Any advice on tuning would be appreciated. |

Well the bike is running sick! It revs right up, with no hesitation. You can crack it from 1,000 rpm wide open and it just revs up. Sounds great. I can't wait to get the wheel bearings, brakes and fuel tank done.
So here is what I did. Thanks for the petcock Papaluker.
Everything looks real good, throttle responce is now unbeilevable! The butterfly's allignment to eachother was way off. No matter how far off I backed the Idle screw #'s 3 & 4 would not cover the ports. So I ajusted everything by eye, sounds like I got pretty close. I will get the mercury vacume gauge out soon.
Looks pretty good, sounds even better. I made a video, I just need to find a find a server to hold a 50mb video. anyone know of one? |

Well I just bought a cb1100f swingarm, $160 shipped. My wheel bearing should be in this week, so I figured before I put the wheel on I will install the new swingarm. I think I am going to just polish it, I will decide when it comes in, hopefully tomorrow.
I will get pics up when I get it.
Is there anything I should know about changing the swingarm? I have never done one before. |

I'm not sure if your aware of this but the rectangular box section stock 1100F swing arm is of steel make up, not aluminum (they are painted silver/alum. from the factory) . It may "clean up" but polishing in the manner of the alumimum arms of course will not be part of the equation. But then again there is "chrome plating" if you are so inclined.

Well you didn't burst it too bad, but I did think it was alluminum from the looks of it. But as we all know looks can be decieving. The swingarm I got doesn't have the chain tensioners either, and mine are totally different I learned today.
I would think the 1100 swingarm is longer, and more rigid, but thats just a guess... well I like the box look and the coating on it. The guy put some other tensioners from another honda that he said will work... do I beileve him, probably not... but we will see. Well atleast I got a swingarm... guess I need some more parts now.
Are the spacers the same? Probably not. |

Ben,
Overall fit of the 1100 piece to the 900 should be the same in length and such. 20 inches from pivot center to "nominal" axle center is the numbers I use. "Nominal" = average alxe center which takes the mid point of the slider adjustment as the point of ref for measurement. Axle spacing between wheels and swingarm types should also be very close if not a direct bolt in swap. The engine countershaft (out put from the motor/tranny) is the same on all the F's , so wheel hubs and drive sprockets are all based on the same alignment to this countershaft sprocket.
I believe the thinking is that the box section offers up a stiffer member (no Viagra needed) then the early F tube sections. Weight savings per say is not the issue,..it's about structure and stiffness for the same weight. In the steel tube -v- alum box,..the alum box section arms can yeild a stiffer structure, due to heavyer wall thickness, at the same weight as the thinner steel tube piece. This based on stiff versus weight thinking. Of course there is also weight savings with alum sections as the needed structural stiffness limit is met before you reach the maximum weigth goal. Crap! did any of that make sense?

Well it looks like I wasted some money on that swingarm, stupid impulse buying... But I got the tank done with the por-15, I removed that stupid vacum gas valve, the bike looks cleaner without it, and isn't as cold blooded. My wheel bearings just came in so I am waiting on the tools to get them in. I just need to order some brake pads, and get my new(used) master cylinder in place. Other than that I am seriously thinking about removing those caps on the air fuel ajuster so I don't have to remove the bowls everytime I need to ajust to the other side of it.
My uncle had a thought... he said I might have a problem with the screws backing out, because of the vibration. But I beileve the springs will hold them in there correct places. Any thoughts? |

So I finally got to test ride the bike last night, with no fairing, so no headlight... it was interesting. But going down the road it doesn't want to go over 5,000rpms and isn't very quick getting there either. It will sit there in neautral and rev up with no problems andI it cruises great, nice and smooth. Just no power. I am going to check the timing and sync the carbs. Hopefully that cures it. I will get some pictures up soon of the bike all together. |
