Have a nice 1100F chain guard but has a few rusty areas (back side).

My question(s).

I want to get it rechromed. Do I somehow have to find a way to REMOVE THE RUST BEFORE sending it off to a "chromer"??

If so HOW??

The next step is rechroming. WHO do the members recommend to have the work done?

Thank you

If you send it to me I'll take it to the guy who does my rechrome work. No need for any special prep.

Rick

I think he charged me $50. Close to a wash, when you consider shipping out/back. He does beautiful work, though.

I have to go see him on Tuesday. I'll take a chainguard and confirm that price with him.

Shipping might not be so much of a factor if you ship 4 or more at a time . Does he require the removal of the rivets ?

All the ones I've taken to him have been tack welded, not riveted. No disassembly required.

The back hoop on all the ones I have are riveted . Not the 2 front tabs which are tac welded . Can you check with him to clarify if rivets have to be removed ? I have at least 5 I can ship

He's on the web:

www.barchromeplating.com

Good guy, his name is Bruce. Here are a couple of pics of one of the chainguards he's done for me, no rivet removal required.

Rick, is there any way your guy can rechrome a set of headers? I was sold a header with abrasive damage to most of the chrome so I'd like to make it nice again.

I think your best best is having them ceramic coated, QC Coatings out by CBX-tras does a great job but there might be someone in Rochester as well. You can never clean them well enough for a chromer to dunk them.

I've been told that by local places about mufflers, you can't dunk em due to the dirty residue inside. But just headers? Might be able to snake a bottle brush through there with cleaner to get rid of all the gunk. I'll see if Rick's (Cliffiec) guy would be willing?

Thanks

Dean, I expect to see him tomorrow, I'll ask him about doing headers.

Dean, if Rick's plater can't do headers, I have a plater who can. You'll have to talk to him directly in regards to pricing, however. I've seen his work and it's beautiful.

Is this the exhaust you recently bought that was not as nice as the pictures depicted? Before spending money on re-chroming, I would contact eBay or PayPal and dispute the sale.

Tom, this is in reference to the very same set.
Unfortunately I purchased outside the confines of Ebay so I'm not covered by its buyer protections.
To make matters worse, the seller insisted I use "friends and family" payment. I assume to save the fees associated with payments for goods and services? Anyway, I found out the hard way from Paypal that a payment in the friends and family style carries zero protection for the buyer.

Alas, i'm stuck with the route of paying a lot of money to fix the damage.

Dean, as I understand it he will do header rechroming. He wasn't in the shop today, but I spoke with his son, and found that he'll do them. Wasn't able to get pricing, maybe later this week.

Best,

Rick

Had comms with Bruce today, chainguards are $75 each, and header pipes are $50 per foot. I presume this to mean "measure from the top to the collector for each header pipe, and then measure from the start of the collector to the end. Add all the measurement in inches, then divide by 12 to convert to the number of feet. Multiply the number of feet by $50 for the price to rechrome."

I hope that this is correct, but I'm not sure.

If I read correctly it'd be over $400 to chrome a set of headers? Wowza, I think I'll be getting a couple more bids but thank you for asking around for me!

I saw one of Rick's re-chromed chain guards in person yesterday, and it's very nice. You can't go wrong for the price.

I should have left it with you, to use on the RMII. Didn't think about it till I was halfway home... What a Mo!

Thanks Rick, but it wouldn't work with my CBR600RR swingarm anyway. Totally different setup, mounting scheme, etc. Your chain guard belongs on a nice, stock, 1100F.

That a very good price for a re-chrome of chain guard, and sounds like you don't have to wait 3 months to get your parts back.
