Been a member here and at the Custom site for a while. Been more active at the Custom site though.

I drove to the upper part of Virginia, to pick up a 1979 CB750 F frame w/title and engine (missing a few bits) and tank for FREE. Ended up bringing home not only that but the complete front end and a rear wheel ($80).

Did I mention I brought it all home in my wife's Subaru Legacy?

Then I picked this up....

And it came with all of this...

And this is where I am at right now....

I just wanted to mention, I have a good exhaust sys that had surface rust and rust between the pipes at the collector. I got a tall PLASTIC garbage can and put the pipe in it and filled with a washing soda solution and did the reverse electrolysis method. The exhaust came out totally rust free. I painted it with high temp paint. 2 years and still looks nice.

Forgot to mention, The exhaust collars, I bought a gallon of WD RUST SOAK, put the collars in for 8 hrs and they came out beautiful.

Got into the parts engine the past couple evenings to retrieve a couple parts needed to get the 79 up and running.

So I have been doing some light reading on the 79 & 80 f models. The increased swing arm pivot on the 80, also added needle bearings to improve wear as well as strength (14mm to 16mm).
The other change I read about was the difference in offset in the triple trees from 79 to 80. The increase was only 5mm reducing the front wheel trail to 110.
I have the 80 triple tree so would it be worth changing out? So far as the 80 frame goes I see an advantage but not sure it is worth the hassle.

I've been searching the site and think I found my answer but not directly.

As stated I have 1979 750F ss. I also have a 1980 parts bike that has the upgraded needle bearings adn larger pivot bolt.

Do all I need to do to upgrade to the 1980 swing arm is drill out the holes in the frame?

Yes...79' to 80' CBX was the same way......
JJam can make you some bushings when he is settled in.....he made some for member Chico's 79' CBX for
which he installed a 81' Pro Link CBX swing arm into.

I wouldn't drill it.....not enough meat in the hole radially to keep it from chattering....too hard to mount in a drill press (how?)
I would use a tapered ream.....you are only removing 1mm radialy....14mm to 16mm.

Look into my build thread in Super Sport pics and checkout the CBX Pro-Link arm.....you may want to consider it.

I meant to say ream. Spacers? Is the 80 narrower?

If you put in an 80' arm in a 79' it is only the hole size....
If you put a Pro-Link in there you need a thinner spacer/bushing....
