I took some video at Road America on my Z1 because 5th gear failed in practice on my CB-F. This photo below from cbirk taken at Road America shows the Honda in the trailer and you can see the video camera on the Z1 mounted right between the front brake master cylinder & throttle:
Part 1 is the start and the first 3 or so laps. Joe Pethoud passes me on his #32 CB-F putting me down in 4th place, which is where I finish. Part 2 is the last couple of laps and shows me lapping some riders and then gives a detailed account of the last lap. Lots of verbage; but accurate...
Joe's bike; again from cbirk's posting:

Excellent clips, Dennis.
I enjoyed the commentary as well..."turning, turning, turning"...i was thinking the same thing myself. Seemed like it was about a 270 degree corner.
Does the blind left corner still put a knot in your gut or do you get used to it? |

To answer the question about blind corner(s), once I have sufficient time on the track to KNOW exactly where the corner is and how it is, I am nearly is as comfortable as being able to actually see the corner even though I can't.
The way I'd describe it is you see the corner in your mind as clearly as if you're looking at because you know exactly what to expect - unless something 'bad' happened between the last time you went through the corner and this time - like somebody falling or debris.
Just like everything else, it gets easier with experience.
All the stuff you know because you already learned it is EASY - except to those people that haven't learned it yet. |

Watched the first one, then the 2nd one, then the other two you had, and started on a Fast Freddie clip before I realized I was getting pulled into the youtube vortex and narrowly escaped! |

I was born & raised in Port Angeles, WA - therefore I'm naturally a west coaster... and I am still west of the Mississippi.
As far as speeds, I really can only guess. 140 was the number I had in my head before running numbers on the gearing commander website. I don't have a tach on the bike so I don't know the RPM for sure. I ran 18/42 gearing at Road America. Redline when the tach was operable was 10,500. I'm guessing I'm pulling between 9500 & 10K when I'm shifting and I am pretty sure I'm pulling less than 10k in 5th. The tire size is 130/80x18; when I plug all that in I get these types of #'s for 5th:
9K = 142.5 mph
9.5K = 150 mph
I think in between those two #'s is real... I'd bet some of my money on that range, but not all of it!

Those belly fairings are pretty cool lookin. Are they commercially available or homemade / modded items?

That was absolutely fantastic. Sure brings back some fond memories of one of my all time favorite tracks.
I haven't been there since we won the 4hr in 1982 but your video made me feel like it was just yesterday.
Even after all these years I can close my eyes and see every single corner - didn't have that little chicane after the carrousel back then so it made the 'tunnel through the trees' a bit faster.
Mike Hodgson said he was going up there to race - did he make it?
He has his bikes built by Cris at Racing/Sport Serices across from Road Atlanta - the same shop that builds mine - and he runs with us in Historic Moto GP.
If I had a little more money and a little more spare time I would certainly love to come out and run with you guys sometime.
Anyway - thanks for the memories - keep ridin', racin' and havin'fun!!
