The bad news
So i stripped the original 750 motor down to find out the where the rattle
was coming from, didn't take long.Number two big end was just about to
blow,i reckon a few more miles and it would have tried to escape through the
block, here are a couple a snaps, the bearing has spread about 4mm wider than stock.
The crank is in bad shape too
The good news
I bought an old engine off flea bay for £30 a while ago,i got it for spares as it was
cheap,i started to strip it tonight and could not believe how good a condition it's
in,its like new inside the cam cover, brand new seal, none of the covers have been
touched,no damage to any fins no signs of wear so i'm going to pull the oil pan
check the rest of it out, clean it up and try it in the bike over the winter.

Assuming you are not abusing this engine and providing regular maintenance (which based on the looks of your bike you are), something is quite wrong with this engine! Did you check the oil pressure lately? Oil pump bad? Metal shavings in the system? etc?
Be careful if you use any parts from this engine... |

Yeah, it looks like the oil pressure may have been low. Look for leaks in the oil system, or maybe the oil pump was sucking air from a leak in the bottom path plate.
Here's a rod bearing found in an 1100 motor a friend bought.

Not sure what the cause was,the oil and filter were changed evey 1500 miles
the engine had good pressure and the shells only had around 6000 miles
on them, i always let the motor warm up before a ride and although it was ridden
hard sometimes,it wasn't bouncing off the red line.I stripped the rest of the big ends
and they are in good condition as are the mains so i'm a bit in the dark as to what caused
the damage. The only thing i didn't check yet was the oil ways in the cases .
My only consolation is the cheap find off flea bay.
