Is everyone driving the bullock trains today? It's a dirty job but somebody's got to do it! No sleeping on the job! Move along little doggies.

G'day Gene.
A local family were using them to cart logs out of the bush up till about 25 years ago. I lived just up the track from Kevin.

Interesting. It was thx113 that wrote an email to me and first mentioned them to me when I bought some NOS parts from him. He told me they were on the bullock train and should be here any day. They came by air within a week or so of course. Stupid Americans don't know nuthin. Laughing

I'll bet greasin that axle or fixin a broken felloe with that load on there wasn't for sissies!!!

We still have people that can size a rim for a felloe here in the woods. I saw Eustace Conway do it on the box. First he had to make a new felloe. Then he got the rim too big, then he had to shrink it before he could then heat the rim up so it would cool and shrink onto the felloe and hold the whole thing together!

You really got to plan your eating when the food only comes by oncet a yearin. (NorCal twang, where I grew up, or maybe the Dirty South drawl)

My grandpappy had sheep, but not that damn many!

G'day Gene.
Interesting fella Eustace, two weeks older than me. I lived in a humpy out past Kevin's for 9 years (no electricity).
I love stories of old folk and their experiences.
Cheers

Hi Gene,
they use road trains out here now, we have roads sort of around outback Aus. Some interesting out back roads and the blokes who navigate them are in shows like Outback Truckers

At least with a road train, there's safety in numbers. Hopefully cellular the whole way, or there's always sat phones.

Gene,
Some of these blokes go out into the most remote areas. one bloke carries a big excavator on one of his trailers just to dig himself out of trouble if he gets stuck somewhere with no hope of help from anybody, except maybe the camera crew on the odd trip out there

Gene,
Aus is unique in the fact that most of the population is along the east coast with a pocket in the south west and central south west and a city in the north west and a city in about the middle of the outback. Thousands and thousands of miles in the outback with nothing

Hey Norm. As I said, it was Jeff (thx113) that first made me aware of the bullock trains by just mentioning them to me. I had to Google it, hearing of something I hadn't ever heard of before about Australia.

I think he's in Perth or thereabouts. So I read numerous articles on the net about them. I wasn't aware they were actually still negotiating the bush to this day, or that they had progressed to "trains". Fascinating. Not for weak sheilas. Takes a fair suck to make that trip. Quite a long walkabout.

Next time I'll try not to sound like such a wise man from the east. Fremantle to Perth doesn't really require the bullock train anymore, just a quick jag on shanks ponies. It's the Scot in me bones. Castle Donan was my father's mother's heritage about 12 generations back...

Hi Gene, yes Perth is that little city over on the west side of Aus, I think it is about 3000ks east of Melb. We do have some big trucks here now , not many bullock trains

Aus Post is slow and expensive but I can't see the use of bullock trains being the cause, I believe they are using airmail now

In the US, many years ago airmail used to be a separate class and cost extra. Nowadays there is such a huge preponderance of letter type mail, cost isn't a factor anymore, so it all goes airmail. Larger items, called parcels, go as parcel post and that's by ground, but it isn't by ox drawn cart, just 18 wheelers.

There's a new player for us Aussies. Shop Mate is a part of AusPost in Oregon. Most US shops post free in the US so I get my stuff delivered there. Then SM fill a Focker Friendship to come to Au.
I had a HDWG front end posted that way. Fed Ex quoted $750 for delivery. Shop Mate did it for $228.
Cheers

An aeroplane doesn't take 5 to 14 days from melbourne to Perth. Australia post regulatory takes that long.

Gene, we pay very dearly for postage across around Aus , we do not get what we pay for, we are ripped blind and I'm sure it is to compensate Aus Post for handling all the free postage stuff from China

G'day Norm.
You're probably right mate. A friend is a local postie. It's unbelievable the amount of parcels he delivers from China. He says it seems to be increasing at least 100% a year.
I had a parcel from Sydney to me (Ulladulla) take 21 days. It went via Darwin!!!!!
Cheers

We need to make 40% tariffs on everything sent from China until they start playing by the same rules we do (meaning Aus/Can/NZ/UK/US). No more govt subsidized shipping from China. Rolling Eyes

USPS is going broke too.

G'day Gene.
Most of the blame lies with the big companies wanting greater and greater profit margins so reduce the manufacturing cost so get it made in China/Korea. Wasn't long before China/Korea saw they could flood the market with their own products. Then there's us, the consumer, that wants more and more as cheap as possible. The snowball keeps rolling.
Cheers

A couple of years ago I bought some little LED thing cost $1 with free shipping and our postie delivered it to my letterbox. Last week I posted a small lawn mower air filter cap to a friend in Adelaide, the thing only weighed a few grams and it cost $8.50 to send it

In Canada, we pay $1.05 to post a letter. That's 5 cents for delivery and $1.00 for storage.

never had much bother with bullock trains but them iron ore ones up by Dampier - bloomin ek you got time for lunch and a wee nap waiting for these to pass

and yi don't need a big empty land to stuff up yir post, once we cover for import duty and tax
Then Evil or Very Mad they typically slap on an extra £15 for islands and highlands locations, now were not speaking remote Hebrides / fair isles etc.. - were not even speaking Islands and highlands region - Aberdeen-shire is good enough for the extra £15 rip off - in Australia talk distance from Capitol City ? less than what you blokes would consider a nip down to the shop for a pint of milk
