I found the cam gear bolt. This is looking down the cam chain tunnel through the barrels. |

Looking at that I would say that the bolt has gone through the chain .................Ouch !
Talked to Tony (herdygerdy) last night about a visit so it just might come off and I can have a look while I'm there or if you have progressed that far, re-degree the cams for you.

I reckon the bolt fell out and jammed in the chain at the crankshaft and that is what stalled the engine.
When I tried to clutch start it that's when the "oh no" happened.
I tried calling Tony today but couldn't get onto him. |

While it looks like you could get it cleaned up with filing and buffing Scotty, I think I'd be calling up Brent....don't wanna get back in there again. |

It's OK, I'm in Sydney next Sat/Sunday and staying with Herdygerdy who lives very close. So will be calling in to see Scott and help him where I can.

Hi Scotty,
Brent arr. mid pm Sat 07MAY, so may be best to get together Sunday, but with it being being Mother's Day, you may have more pressing obligations...?
Have a think and let me know. Looking fwd to catching up and hopefully helping out.
Cheers..herdygerdy |

Gday Tony
I'm not too sure what's happening next weekend. My Mum lives in QLD so I guess if I ring her in the morning I have the rest of the day free. But maybe I should wait and see if we have a family thing or not.
I'll ring you during the week.
The engine isn't at a stage where we can do too much cause I think I need to check the crank for straightness and I don't have the head back yet or any other parts for assembly.
We can still look at it while sitting in a chair and talking, so swing by and have a beer.

Not too bad 4 bent valves. 2 in 2 out. No damage to the pistons so a bit of a surprise, but happy to have had the head serviced rather than take the risk and run it with out checking.
It's got them Kibble White valves so it will be a month or so until they get them in. |

Wow its been a month.
The other head which is off the sidecar has 8 bent exhaust valves.
It's taken a while for the dude to pull it apart and inspect it, but at least it's one step closer to being fixed. |

Back at it again. Bearings came in so I am cleaning the cases and going to assemble with new bearings but no crank and send it to be measured.
I need to find out why it keeps eating the outer crank bearings.
I just found a little surprise in the lower crankcase left hand side |

Gday Chris
Thanks for the good wishes. I got the cylinder heads back today.
Hows it going at your end? Quite busy I seem to remember reading.
Have a good one

Seeing as it's not a race I glued the cases back together the other day.
Another week or two and I'll get the sump on. |

I recon I'll put the oil pump on before the sump. That way I can watch myself break the little gear thing that is a prick to replace.
Good thinking? |

Fuck me.
I thought I'd have a go and put the cams back in to get a few more parts off the bench. I went to turn the crankshaft to line up the marks on the timing unit and the poofter only turns a quarter turn and then locks up. I'm now thinking I should have checked the engine turns over a bit earlier on in the piece.

Maybe the A cam chain is stuffed in the bottom. It happens. Just pull up on it and gently move the crank back and forth until it unwads and comes up. |

I wish it was the cam chain. I hold it up with one hand and turn the engine with the other while shinning a head torch down to the crankshaft and the chain is not bunched up.
This engine makes me sad.

I know it sounds stupid, but is it in gear? |

I've been fooled by thinking the cam chain wasn't fouled before, even though it was. Just sayin. |

Fair question for sure. I've been known to over look the obvious, but I checked that it was in neutral. I put the cases back together in neutral so then I clicked it down one into first and then back up into neutral. I have now gone up a few gears and can't get it back down to neutral. |
