Here is my 1983 Honda CB1100RD I purchased early
this year. The ‘R’ bikes were produced in limited quantities from 1981 to 1983
to compete in factory endurance racing in Europe. They were touted as "The
ultimate air-cooled four" of their time and dominated their racing class in 81,
82 & 83. To this day, they are considered comparable to many "modern" sport
bikes. In any case, they are simply the most awesome of all the early
air-cooled DOHC Hondas, but unfortunately, were never officially available in
the US.
Unless, of course, you had lots of money. My bike
was imported by Malcolm Forbes in 1983 and was part of his “Capitalistic Tools”
collection. It is one of only a few ‘R’ bikes ever imported into this country
and I am very lucky to have come across the opportunity to buy it late last
year. I have always hoped to see an ‘R’ bike someday, couldn’t imagine ever
riding one, but never even dreamed about actually owning one. I will spare you
all the details, but let me just say I saved it from a certain future death from
it’s storage place under a tarp on the streets of New York City!
It’s in amazingly good/original condition and did
not require much on my part to return it back into the fine running machine it
is. I don’t think I can tell you how exciting this bike is to ride in this
small space. The few lucky owners from around the world have often described
massive grins that stick to their faces for hours after riding ‘R’ bikes. Now I
know what they are talking about :)
